Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

The Need

Ivory Coast

Two civil wars in the past 15 years has left Côte d'Ivoire in grinding poverty and deep spiritual need. In the second civil war, ending in 2011, Muslim insurgents targeted Christian pastors and 160 were killed. Our partner, Victor, pursued by rebel forces, fled to Ghana. Upon his return to Côte d'Ivoire in late 2011, Victor understood to reach his country a major change of direction was needed. A network of volunteer-led house churches, because of a lack of visibility, could endure turbulent social conditions. This realization led Victor to a series of meetings at Xenos where it became apparent the Lord was bringing us together for a church planting partnership.

The Vision is Within Reach

Our vision is to reach the 36 unreached people groups of Côte d'Ivoire through strategic house church planting. Effective witness for Christ is taking root in Côte d'Ivoire. To date, our partners have planted 947 house churches, involving 8,200 members. This rapid expansion of the gospel is compelling evidence both of the openness of Côte d'Ivoire and the effectiveness of house church planting among animist and Christo-pagan populations.

Our partners have set up four training centers in strategic cities. From these staging grounds, 47 church planters been trained and mobilized. These centers offer continuing education for church planters and close supervision of their work in the villages.

Xenos has entered into a five-year partnership with Victor and his team. Through this time, both sides of the partnership will assess the effectiveness of our collaboration to determine if we will continue for a second five-year agreement. Xenos is committed to ongoing training of church planters and meeting the financial needs to mobilize them. We currently support 47 church planters and our partners support 20 of them. We will also seek ways to address the grinding poverty in villages.

The specific funding priorities are:

67 Church Planters     working in scores of villages to establish a network of house churches led by local volunteers.

4 Training Centers
providing the necessary
training and oversight for
church planters.
