Xenos Medical Team Shares the Love of Christ in Ecuador

In September a team of 24 people from Xenos went to Huaquillas, Ecuador to set up a medical clinic, serving with global partners from the region. Team member Amy Kear offers this first-hand account of their work:

Our planned route to Ecuador had to be rerouted because of Hurricane Irma, set to hit Florida. Once we got to Huaquillas, we began to see why this city was the ideal spot for our medical clinic. A border city to Peru, the town was bustling with people and traffic.

Our first day of clinic we were welcomed with a ceremony in the town square honoring us for our work—they raised the local flags and played the national anthem. Two city leaders spoke, thanking us for our help, and we thanked them for partnering with us as well.

There were hundreds of patients sitting in plastic chairs under tents outside City Hall waiting to be treated. We walked inside to our designated auditorium where we had set up a clinic the day before counting thousands of pills to prepare various medicines and vitamin packs for patients. Our first day we saw hundreds, our second day we saw hundreds, and by the end of the four day clinic, we had seen 1782 patients!

Each patient received something special. Some went to see Dr. Oatney for eye care. Others saw Dr.

Kear for dental work, and still others saw Dr. Gladwell, Dan Shroer, or Stephanie Rogers for medical help. We were able to fill 2,304 free prescriptions at our clinic pharmacy. We had a group of nurses, translators and other assistants from our team. Staff from the city of Huaquillas as well as volunteers from the local church helped out as well. These incredible home church volunteers would talk to each patient individually, learn about them, get contact information for follow-up, walk them through the gospel, and spend time praying with them.

The power of God was evident on our trip. He was clearly preparing the way for us, working ahead of time on people’s hearts and giving our team energy, refreshment, and encouragement throughout the week. When we heard the final tally of salvations from the clinic, we knew that this could only be possible with God. 911 patients prayed to receive Christ in 4 days! 130 of these patients had traveled from Peru, meaning that we may have open doors to another country as well! Our team loved the experience.

There were long and exhausting days and emotionally trying experiences since some patients needed extensive medical treatment. As a team, we would go out together in the evenings. Spending time together brought our team close and helped us to rely on one another. We faced difficulties and triumphs and, walking away, we could do nothing but praise God for His powerful work in this city. We are looking forward to the ways he continues to communicate His love to all of the people we came in contact with. We are all grateful to have been a small piece of something so incredible.

Pray for the patients we saw, the city staff we worked alongside, the churches being planted in Ecuador, and those we met in the community who we got to talk to about our purpose in Huaquillas and God’s love for them through Jesus.

We encourage you to find out more about our global partners in Ecuador, and support them financially, as well as in your prayers! You can learn more at www.xenos.org/globalpartners/ecuador.
