5250 Elementary and Middle School Retention

5251 Conditions for Considering Retention

5251.1
Any student in grades 1-5 having a significant weakness in a subject area may be considered a candidate for retention.

5251.2
Any student in grades 6-8 having a D or below on his final grades may be considered a candidate for retention.

5251.3
Any student in grades K-5 who demonstrates less than 70% mastery of the cumulative PPOs in both CBE programs will be considered for possible retention.

5251.4
Any student showing a below grade level achievement on the yearly SAT tests with less than one year's growth from the previous year may be considered a possible candidate for retention.

5252 Goal of Retention

5252.1
Retention is justified on the evaluation of the growth and development of the whole child. If a child's growth is likely to be greater in subject matter, skills, personal growth, and social growth through assignment to the same grade a second year, he may be so assigned.

5253 Retention Decisions

5253.1
Teachers are not to indicate to the parent that a child is being considered for retention prior to reviewing the situation with the administrator and obtaining permission to initiate such a discussion.

5253.2
Parents are consulted before the administrator makes any retention decisions.

5253.3
The administrator makes the final decision on the retention.
