5440 Intervention

5441 Definition

5441.1
Intervention is simply a specified strategy to individualize learning for a student or a group of students. It addresses three needs: remedial (students not working at grade level), practice (students on grade level who need additional practice) and enrichment (students who already displayed mastery)

5441.2
Intervention occurs on 3 levels. The classroom level addresses needs for specific objectives. The building and community levels address needs for entire subjects, such as second grade math objectives.

5442 Classroom Level Intervention

5442.1
Classroom level intervention includes the following structures: independent assignments, small group assignments, class assignments, adult tutors, peer tutors, cross-age tutors, computer assignments, and parent-supervised assignments.

5442.2
Classroom intervention will use teaching methods focused on various learning styles; including using different stimuli (visual, auditory, or manipulative), using real-life situations (role-playing, including simulations), using thinking skills (problem-solving), and using repetition (drill).

5442.3
Since learning styles affect the mastery of objectives, no student will be labeled "remedial" until different teaching methods have proven unsuccessful in achieving grade level performance. To accommodate a different learning styles, the teacher will select different intervention methods for various intervention attempts for the same objective.

5442.4
If a student did not demonstrate mastery in the initial assessment, the teacher will provide intervention assignments throughout the remainder of the year until the student achieves mastery or at least 2 separate intervention attempts have been made. (The exception is for those objectives assessed in the last month of school).

5442.5
Objectives not mastered by the end of the year will be added to the students objectives for the next year as remedial needs. The teacher will provide intervention assignments for these objectives throughout the remainder of the year until the student achieves mastery or at least 2 separate intervention attempts have been made.*

5443 Building Level Intervention*

5443.1
If the teacher feels the intervention needs of a particular student cannot be met within the classroom, the teacher may request an intervention consultation with the administrator and appropriate school staff to discuss the following building level intervention structures.

5443.2
A homework aide may be assigned to help students needing additional practice on assignments.

5443.3
A tutor may be assigned to help students with remedial needs for specific objectives.

5443.4
An inter-grade grouping may be made for students needing remedial or enrichment instruction for a group of objectives. The grouping may be for a certain subject for the entire year or for specified units. A student who has not mastered more than 60% of the previous grade level PPOs may be placed in a lower grade level math or reading group. A student mastering 100% of the previous grade level PPOs may be placed in a higher grade level.

5443.5
Teacher coordination may be necessary when help from another teacher outside the CBE subject (e.g. the gym teacher) is required. The teacher responsible for the CBE subjects will request from the administrator an intervention consultation that includes such other teachers.

5443.6
Screening tests for specific disabilities may be administered by the teacher or curriculum staff. The classroom teacher requests an intervention consultation from the administrator. If the screening test is decided upon, the parents will be notified of the purpose, type, date, and results of the test as described in Policy 7253 "Guidance Services - Reporting to Parents".

5443.7
Disability testing by the school counselor may be assigned if screening tests indicate a need, the student scores less than 30% mastery on a CBE grade level objectives in a program, or the student is not progressing adequately with previous intervention structures. If such a test is decided upon, the parents will be notified of the purpose, type, date, and results of the test as described in Policy 7253 "Guidance Services - Reporting to Parents".

5443.8
Guidance recommendations pertaining to the classroom may come from the school counselor or assigned guidance professionals as described in Policy 7250 "Guidance Services - Coordination with Professional Assistance." Such recommendations will be implemented as much as possible and in a timely fashion.

5443.9
Mandatory summer school or tutoring may be assigned to students in grades K-5 who demonstrate less than 70% mastery of cumulative PPOs in one or both CBE programs.

5443.10
Retention may be considered for any student in grades K-5 who demonstrates less than 70% mastery of the cumulative PPOs in both CBE programs. See Policy 5240 "Retention and Withdrawal".

5443.11
Accelerated promotion may be considered for any student who can demonstrate 100% mastery of the next year objectives in both CBE programs.

5444 Community Level Intervention

5444.1
Academic dismissal from Xenos Christian Schools may be pursued for any student having significant weakness in a subject area the year after retention.

5444.2
Any student in grades 1-6 who has not mastered five or more key critical objectives for the grade two years lower than his current grade will be assumed to have academic needs requiring more assistance than can be offered at Xenos Christian Schools. The administrator may require parents to withdraw the student.
