Discipline Options
The XCS staff determines which disciplinary procedure to use. The following is a list of discipline options for the school.
Verbal Warnings
The student receives a verbal reminder the particular action is in violation of school rules.
Time-Outs
Inappropriate class behavior can result in a time-out or brief isolation from the group. Time-outs are no longer than 15 minutes. The teacher may give the student the time-out in a location other than the classroom.
Reward System
A teacher may establish various point systems to encourage positive behavior or discourage negative behavior.
Detentions
A teacher may elect to give elementary age students a detention of 5 - 30 minutes for inappropriate behavior. Elementary students typically serve their detentions during recess. Middle School detentions occur once a week from 3:15 to 4:15. Failure to report to detention promptly at 3:15 will result in an additional detention. The office sends a note to the parent or guardian when their student is scheduled for detention. Students receive a detention after accumulating five and ten points in a quarter. Students accumulating 12 points in any one quarter may receive an in-school or out-of-school suspension (at the Middle School Director's discretion). The following are examples of minor infractions.
|
Disrupting the learning experience |
Disrespect to other students |
Disrespect or disobedience to authority |
Classroom misconduct resulting in dismissal from class |
Inappropriate hallway or lunchroom behavior |
Inappropriate language |
Repeated class tardiness |
Parent Conferences
The teacher or Administrator may schedule a conference with a student's parent. The purpose of the conference is to discuss the child's behavior and an appropriate plan of action.
Mandatory Testing
The Administrator may require the parents to pursue physical, psychological or other types of testing for their child.
Suspensions
For repetitive incidents the Administrator may elect to suspend a student. The Administrator may suspend a child to the parent or guardians home or to the office for a time not to exceed ten (10) days.
Students are confined to the office for an in-school suspension. During this time the student can complete homework, tests, quizzes or other projects. Suspensions to the parent or guardian of a student occur for major infractions or repeated detentions. The Administrator may request a parent conference before the student returns to school.
Mandatory Counseling
In certain circumstances, the Administrator will recommend the student see a counselor designated by the school. Prior to the student returning to school the counselor and parents must speak with the Administrator.
Expulsion
The Administrator can recommend a students' expulsion from the school. The school board must vote to approve this action.
