Therefore, teachers will use a variety of teaching methods that involve all different learning styles. 5221.2 XCS will provide educational resources to accommodate instruction using different learning styles. 5222 Field Trips5222.1 Field trips must be justified educationally and have a direct relationship to the goals and objectives of a particular subject. 5222.2 All trips must be approved by the CCS, XCS or HCS administrator 3 weeks prior to the scheduled date. 5222.3 Permission slips are required for any trip off the school ground. 5222.4 Copies of students' Emergency Medical Authorization forms must be taken whenever they leave the school grounds. 5222.5 Each class can have a maximum of 3 field trips per year. Field trips scheduled by specialty teachers are considered separately. 5222.6 Each class is allotted an annual field trip budget. Expenditures above this amount must be paid by the student and requires administrative approval.
5222.7 Parent and staff drivers must complete a Driver Verification form for each field trip. This form must be turned into the CCS, XCS or HCS office by the day of the trip. 5223 Library Use and Multimedia Presentations5223.1 Use of the school library and multimedia equipment should be coordinated through a librarian appointed by the administrator. 5224 Guest Speakers5224.1 Any guest speaker in a classroom must have the approval of the administrator. 5225 Class and Homework Assignments for Elementary and Middle School Students5225.1 Class assignments are tasks to be completed at the end of each subject period or during independent work time that is provided. 5225.2 Homework is a task assigned to be completed outside regular school hours. Homework does not refer to class assignments that a particular student did not finish and must take home to complete. 5225.3 Class and homework assignments must be meaningful assignments to reinforce what has been or will be taught in the classroom. 5225.4 The teacher will assume that the failure to bring back homework to school as required was the result of the irresponsibility of the student and may assign some disciplinary consequence. If the parent, however, prevents the student from doing or returning the homework, they should write a note explaining the circumstances to exempt the student from disciplinary consequences. In either case, the teacher may have the child stay in at recess to do the homework. 5225.5 Parents will be informed of the homework policy through the parent handbook and will be encouraged to inform the teacher if assignments are taking excessive amounts of time. 5225.6 Teachers will provide students with make-up work for work missed during an excused absence. The responsibility for completing make-up work rests with the student and parent. 5225.7 Please refer to the XCS Homework Policy for further information. 5230 Elementary and Middle School Student EvaluationXCS uses pre-assessment, formative, cumulative and school-wide evaluations in planning educational experiences of an individual student. 5231 Pre-assessment Evaluations5231.1 All Kindergartners are placed in the program only after achieving a recommended level on a readiness test given by XCS the month before school starts. The results of a preschool readiness test may also be used. 5231.2 All new students whose standardized test scores from the previous year are below grade level or those for whom standardized test scores are not available will take a placement test to verify that the student meets admission requirements. 5231.3 Results from ability tests administered in the Spring to selected grades will be used to identify students who need special programs. 5232 Formative Assessment5232.1 Every nine weeks, academic achievement reports for all subjects are issued. Interim reports will be sent in the middle of this period to those students experiencing extreme difficulty in a subject area. 5232.2 Report marks are indicated by a letter that shows the extent to which the pupil has completed grade level objectives in the course of study. 5232.3 Report marks show the extent the pupil has applied himself according to the individual student's ability and progress without comparison to the other class members. 5232.4 Report marks are arrived at through the use of homework and workbook pages, projects or reports, quizzes, curriculum chapter and unit tests, teacher-made tests, and teacher observation of student performance on grade level objectives in the course of study. 5232.5 On the Individual CBE Progress Chart, the teacher marks "X" for mastery for each objective level (fact/skill, concept, or problem solving) when the student has met the corresponding objectives. 5232.6 If the student is not displaying satisfactory progress, the teacher may recommend tutoring or further testing. 5232.7 If the student is displaying above average performance in reading or math, placement testing may be repeated to determine if a higher level of instruction is needed. 5233 Cumulative Assessment5233.1 At the end of the year, students in grades 6 - 8 are assigned a final grade for each subject by averaging the grades for the 4 grading periods of the year. 5233.2 At the beginning of the school year, the teacher receives the previous year's Progress Charts. In the Remedial Needs section of the Individual CBE Progress Chart, the teacher writes the CBE objectives from the previous year that the student had not mastered. The teacher records the student's mastery for these objectives in the same way as for the other objectives. 5233.2 Yearly standardized achievement tests and writing assessments for each grade level are administered in the spring. 5233.3 The office maintains an academic cumulative file for each student that includes yearly SAT scores, writing assessments, CBE results, results from ability tests, copies of yearly academic achievement report, and results from any other standardized testing. 5233 School-wide Assessments5233.2 CBE programs and curricular subjects are assessed every 5 years, including an evaluation of the results from the intervening annual standardized testing. 5240 Preschool Student Evaluation5250 Elementary and Middle School Retention5251 Conditions for Considering Retention5251.1 Any student in grades 1-5 having a significant weakness in a subject area may be considered a candidate for retention. 5251.2 Any student in grades 6-8 having a D or below on his final grades may be considered a candidate for retention. 5251.3 Any student in grades K-5 who demonstrates less than 70% mastery of the cumulative PPOs in both CBE programs will be considered for possible retention. 5251.4 Any student showing a below grade level achievement on the yearly SAT tests with less than one year's growth from the previous year may be considered a possible candidate for retention. 5252 Goal of Retention5252.1 Retention is justified on the evaluation of the growth and development of the whole child. If a child's growth is likely to be greater in subject matter, skills, personal growth, and social growth through assignment to the same grade a second year, he may be so assigned. 5253 Retention Decisions5253.1 Teachers are not to indicate to the parent that a child is being considered for retention prior to reviewing the situation with the administrator and obtaining permission to initiate such a discussion. 5253.2 Parents are consulted before the administrator makes any retention decisions. 5253.3 The administrator makes the final decision on the retention. 5260 Special Needs Withdrawal5261 Guidance Needs5261.1 If an enrolled student is diagnosed by a guidance professional as having severe learning disabilities or emotional/behavioral difficulties, the student no longer meets admission requirements and the administrator may require parents to withdraw the student. 5262 Health Needs5262.1 If an enrolled student is diagnosed by a health professional as having severe physical difficulties, the student no longer meets admission requirements and the administrator may require parents to withdraw the student. 5263 Academic Needs5263.1 Any student having significant weakness in any subject for any grading period the year after retention will be assumed to have academic needs requiring more assistance than can be offered at Xenos Christian Schools. The administrator may require parents to withdraw the student. 5263.2 Any student displaying any of the conditions for considering retention (see section 5241) for two years in a row will be assumed to have academic needs requiring more assistance than can be offered at Xenos Christian Schools. The administrator may require parents to withdraw the student. 5310 Elementary and Middle School Curriculum Selection5311 Curriculum Review Process5311.1 5311.2 5312 Review Committees5312.1 5312.2 5312.3 5312.4 1.
