This passage is a fascinating study of two distinct approaches and responses to God. "What must I do to be saved?" asks the rich man in this passage. "Sell everything," is Jesus' disturbing reply. The man's displeasure sharply contrasts the overflowing joy of a tax collector, who immediately gives his money away in gratitude for his salvation.
