ServeFest Happens October 4
By Sherri Fojas
ServeFest is back! On October 4 Christians in Columbus will put their faith in action with one goal in mind--to demonstrate the love of Christ to our city! Our church will join forces with other churches to serve Columbus communities' needs in powerful practical ways.
Plenty to Do
The purpose of ServeFest is to: unite the churches of the Columbus, demonstrate the love of Christ and meet some deeper needs of the community. This day of good works and compassionate service is a living expression of Matthew 5:16, which challenges us to "let our light so shine before men that they might see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven."
Last year 400 folks from Xenos served all over Columbus. Many worked in the Linden Community Clean up by painting
St. Vincent's playground equipment, doing general maintenance and cleaning up several
Urban Concern buildings; others volunteered
at the MS Walk at the Columbus Zoo; some served seniors in Delaware County; and
still other did community clean-up around Sharon Park and Westgate Park.
Home Group Action
Servefest is a great opportunity for home groups to serve your community. Home group leader, Kim Tyndall reports, "We'd love to see a workday like this more like twice a year. We got such tremendous feedback from the members of our group. It's a good way to work with the other home groups, too."
For some home groups, this event was used as a springboard for folks to get involved in the community on a regular basis. A couple people in the Riggs/Simmons group started doing Meals on Wheels every month. Another home group is helping with the activity programs at a local nursing home, and has been asked to teach the Bible on a quarterly basis.
Please consider how you and your home group can serve the Columbus community. For suggestions of activities, contact Sherri Fojas at fojass@xenos.org or visit www.servefestcolumbus.com.
