Family Development

The purpose of Family Development is to foster healthy families by creating conditions that allow people to be agents of positive change in their community.

Families in Transition (F.I.T.)

The purpose of F.I.T. is to support families through their transition towards healthy living and self-sufficency. Families selected for the program must live in South Linden and agree to the goals of the program that lasts from six to nine months. Each family works with a team which includes local agencies and mentors from the church, that assesses their needs and develops a family plan. Besides helping families become more emotionally, physically and financially healthier, each head of household completes the program by giving back to other participants in the F.I.T. program.

Man Up Group (M.U.G.)

The purpose of M.U.G. is to give participants the opportunity to make positive change by putting into practice significant life skills that will bring personal development and growth. As a result of this support an expectation to give back and serve the community is presented through M.U.G. With the help of the M.U.G. team and local agencies, participants have the opportunity to establish a healthy relationship with God through Christ, acquire and maintain gainful employment, further their education, find housing and deal with personal matters through counseling.

Harambee School Parent Support

Parents at Harambee Christian School are encouraged to volunteer and participate in the Parent Advisory Committee (TPAC) as well as school events and fundraisers. Family Development is available to parents at the school to help bridge cultural gaps and offer support as needed.

Services Provided

Counseling. Classes and counselors are available to targeted families to resolve issues such as family conflict, budgeting and parenting issues. We will help families talk through the issues and come to a biblical framework for resolving problems.

Substance Abuse. The Xenos Never Alone ministry offers a weekly Christ-centered Twelve Step meeting for individuals suffering with chemical dependency.

Job Referrals & Social Services. The Urban Concern office has become a place where individuals come for employment and social service referrals. In a typical week, the staff refers more than five adults to various jobs and social service agencies.

Housing. Urban Concern collaborates with a local housing developer who provides quality, affordable housing for families in the community.
