Short-term
Mission Trips within Xenos Christian Fellowship
Page
4Team Leadership
Leading a successful
short-term mission experience and watching God change people's lives is a
very fulfilling ministry. It can be very rewarding to see people come home
motivated to direct resources toward the expansion of God's kingdom. It is
also a tremendous privilege to witness all of the answered prayer that occurs
in making a trip come together. An effective leader will strive to serve the
team by helping them prepare for the experience, process their reactions to
the culture, develop as a world Christian, and keep their focus directed on
the Lord.
Responsibilities
of Team Leaders include:
- Communication
with Xenos and/or Field Leader for trip planning
- Supervision
of team recruiting and selection
- Coordination
of pre-trip team preparation, team building, and fundraising activities
- Sound management
of funds raised, in conjunction with XCF Accounting Department
- Confirmation
of logistical arrangements, including air transportation, lodging, documentation,
inoculations, etc.
- Oversight
of daily schedule and assignments while on the field
- Preparation
of the team for re-entry
- Encouragement
of potential team leaders and missionaries
- Debrief of
the church upon return
The team leader
should also enlist a group of prayer supporters as a first priority. There
is much to do; much that takes longer than expected. And since there is a
high potential for significantly changed lives, spiritual warfare is to be
expected. Effective completion of these responsibilities will be very time-consuming
and mentally taxing for any one person. Leaders should consider delegating
different responsibilities to various team members or volunteers, and thereby
create ownership, encourage personal growth, and develop future leaders.
