Many of South America’s 150 million people are unreached. Even though there have been churches there for years, nominalism, dualism and spiritism have dominated the religious scene. Although World Team, Xenos’ mission partner in this work, has worked there for 30 years, only in the last several years have the people been more open to the Gospel. In fact, during this time World Team churches have increased from two to twelve. So, the need for trained workers is increasing. The region where the work is being done is very industrious and the people are well educated. Since the team arrived, several discipleship groups have been started, and both the women and the men are eager to learn the Word and to teach it to others. The team has been focusing on creating and implementing curriculum and ministry models that can them be reproduced among the churches in the area. The vision of reaching South America through the churches is already underway!
The South America team is comprised of two Xenos families: James and Beth, whose children Cory and Laura now live in Columbus, Ohio; and Mark and Stephanie, whose children Kalyssa, Trace, Kira and Kitano are with them in Brazil. James and Beth, who began their relationship with Christ in 1971 at a youth retreat in Mansfield, Ohio have long been interested in missions. After getting married in 1976, they soon moved to Chicago where James earned a Masters of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical School. They returned to Columbus to become involved in the home church ministry of Xenos Christian Fellowship. In December, 1987, they began their career in missions working in South America. For the next five years, they pastored churches, taught local training schools, and were involved in vaccination, medical, and dental clinics. However, their greatest love was -- and still is -- training national workers. In 1993, James and Beth were invited to work with World Team to develop a training center for church planters. In 1996, Mark & Stephanie were invited by the national pastors to come and join the existing team and arrived the summer of 1999.
