Egyptian gods & goddesses
Aker - "the Bender" The guardian of the rising and setting sun.
Amaunet - A female counterpart to Amon and one of the primordial gods of the Hermopolitian Ogdoad (group of eight gods). She was also worshipped at Thebes along with Amon and Mut.
Ammut - "Dead-Swallower" The monster who ate the heart of those unworthy of eternal life.
Amon - "the Hidden One" The Theban king of the gods & "that which is hidden". Usually associated with the wind, or things hidden, and was also of the Hermopolitian Ogdoad. At Thebes he became Amon-Re, king of the gods. He was part of the Theban Triad, along with Mut and Khonsu.
Anqet - "Embracing Lady" The water goddess of Elephantine. She was associated with the gazelle.
Antaios - He was originally a double god, "the two falcons", that was later joined to create one, probably that of Horus.
Anubis - "the Royal Child" The jackel-god of mummification & embalming.
Apep - The serpent who daily tried to destroy the sun.
Apis - Seen as the bull with a solar disk between its horns, Apis was associated with Osiris and Ptah.
Aten (a.k.a. Aton) - The disk of the sun. He was worshipped at Tell 'Amarna
Atum - "the Complete One" The god of the setting sun and a form of Re. A primordial god that was represented in the form of a human and a serpent. He was the supreme god in the Heliopolitan Ennead (group of nine gods) and formed with Re to create Re-Atum
Bastet - "Devouring Lady" The cat-goddess of the home & sunlight.
Bes - The dwarf-god of music, dancing & warfare.
Buto - "She Who is Green" The cobra-goddess of Lower Egypt
Duamutef - "Praising his Mother" One of the Four Sons of Horus; he protected the stomach of the deceased.
Geb - "Earth" The god of the earth & he was the husband of Nut the sky goddess.
Hapi - "Runner" The god of the Nile.
Hapy - "Runner" Another of the Four Sons of Horus; he guarded the lungs of the deceased.
Hathor - "House of Horus" The cow-goddess of love, music, dance & women. At Thebes she was also the goddess of the dead. She was worshipped at Dendera as the consort of Horus and Edfu, and was associated with Isis at Byblos.
Horus - "High, Above" The falcon-god of the sun & the Pharaohs; early on he was conflated with Re; sometimes he is treated as Re and other times as someone apart from Re. The earliest royal god was the shape of a falcon, with the sun and moon as his eyes. The sky-god was the ruler of the day. The many forms of Horus are; Re-Harakhti, Harsiesis, Haroeris, Harendotes, Khenti-irti, Khentekhtay (the crocodile-god), and Harmakhis, which is Horus on the horizons, in which the Sphinx of Giza is considered to be his aspect.
Imhotep - "He Who Comes in Peace" The vizier of Djoser was later worshipped as the son of Ptah.
Imsety - "the Kindly One" The son of Horus who guarded the liver of the deceased.
Isis - "the Throne" The goddess of magic & widow of Osiris, mother of Horus; she was worshipped at Philae. Associated with Astarte, Hathor, Nut and Sothis, she was later worshipped over the entire Roman Empire.
Khensu - "Traveller" The Theban god of the moon.
Khepera - "He Who Comes Into Being" The beetle-god of the rising sun.
Khnemu - "Protector/Enricher" The Elephantine god of the Nile & the Inundation.
Khnum - Resembling a human with a rams head, he was worshipped in Hypselis, Esna, Antinoe and Elephantine.
Ma'at - "Truth" The goddess of order & truth.
Min - "the Firm One" The god of male fertility. God of fertility coalesced with Amon and Horus. Min was mainly worshipped at Coptos and Akhmim.
Montu - "Nomad" The Egyptian god of war.
Mut - "Mother" The Theban mother-goddess & wife of Amon. She was part of the Theban Triad (group of three gods).
Nefertem - "Lotus" The Memphis god of the lotus.
Neith - "One Who Is" The goddess of war & weaving.
Nekhebet - "She of Nekheb" The vulture-goddess of Upper Egypt.
Nephthys - "Mistress of the House" The sister of Isis & wife of Seth.
Nun - "Abyss" The god of the primoridal waters of chaos.
Nut - "Sky" The goddess of the sky & mother of Osiris & Isis.
Osiris - "He Sees the Throne" The god of agriculture & the afterlife; was murdered by Seth. He is regarded as the dead king that watches over the nether world and is rejuvenated in his son Horus. As the symbol of eternal life he was worshipped at Abydos and Philae.
Ptah - "Creator" The mummified creation god of Memphis. He was worshipped in Memphis, he coalesced with Sokaris and Osiris later in Egyptian history.
Qebehsenuef - "Cooling his Brother with Water)" The Son of Horus who protected the intestines of the dead.
Qetesh - A Semetic nature goddess worshipped in Egypt.
Re - "Sun" - The creator god of the sun; sometimes conflated with Horus. He was the sun god of Heliopolis. From the fifth Dynasty onwards he becomes a national god and is combined with the supreme deity Amon.
Satet - "One Who Shoots (Arrows)" The Elephantine goddess of the Nile floods & fertility.
Sekhmet - "Powerful Female" The lioness goddess of war & destruction. Sekhmet - She was part of the Memphite Triad with Ptah and Nefertem. She was the mistress of war and sickness.
Selket - "She Who Breathes" The scorpion goddess of magic.
Serapis - The Hellenistic god of the sun & the afterlife. He was mainly worshipped in Alexandria and was later worshipped by the Greeks as Zeus. He was never fully accepted by the Egyptians in the Ptolemaic period.
Seth (a.k.a. Set; called Typhon by the Romans) - "To Dazzle" The god of thunder & storms who murdered his brother Osiris. The son of Geb and Nut in the Heliopolitan Ennead was in the form of an animal that has no zoological equivalent. This powerful god was regarded as god of the desert, making him a god of foreign lands.
Shu - "Dry" The god of the air & father of Nut & Geb; He was an ancient cosmic power and was regarded as the god of the air and the bearer of heaven.
Sobek - "Watching Over You" The god of crocodiles. He was worshipped at the Faiyum and Ombos. During the middle Kingdom he coalesced with Re, Sobek-Re, and was worshipped as primordial deity and creator-god
Tauret - "the Great One" The hippopotamus goddess of women & childbirth.
Tefnut - "Sky-Spittle" The goddess of moisture, rain & the mother of Nut & Geb.
Thoth - "Leader" The ibis-god of wisdom, writing & the moon. He was worshipped as a baboon in Hermopolis.
