4230 Illness During School Day

4231 Dismissal to Home

4231.1
When a student becomes ill or shows signs of communicable diseases at school, he/she should be sent to office to see the school secretary or other office personnel.

4231.2
The office personnel will determine if the child needs to be isolated and taken home by checking if the child has any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • temperature of 100°F
  • conjunctivitis
  • diarrhea
  • difficult or rapid breathing
  • severe coughing
  • stiff neck
  • untreated infected skin patches
  • yellow skin or eyes

If any of these conditions exist, the office staff will notify the parents within the hour or arrange for a designated person to pick up the child if the extent of the illness requires the child to be taken home.

4231.3
Until the child is picked up, he or she will stay in the office, which is isolated from other children and equipped with a cot. No child will ever be left alone or unsupervised.

4231.4
The adult picking up the child must sign out the student in the school office.

4232 Students With Mild Symptoms

4232.1
Any child who does not have any of the symptoms in 4231.2 but does not feel well enough to participate in activities will be allowed to rest on a cot in the office.

4232.2
Office staff will observe the child for worsening conditions necessitating the child to be sent home or improving condition allowing the child to return to the classroom.

4233 Administering Medicines

4233.1
No medicines shall be given at school, nor sent to school with the child unless a medical authorization form is filled out and signed by a parent for each medication or dosage change.

4233.2
All medications must be in the original containers labeled with a prescription identifying the child's name, dosage, type of medication, and times to be given.

4233.3
The medication must be locked in a safety box in the office and administered only by office personnel. Under no circumstances may a child carry medication on his/her person, including cough drops or home remedies. The only exception to this is in the case of asthma inhalers.
