Local Professional Development Committee

Approved Continuing Education Units

  1. Educator professional development activities used for renewal of certificates and licenses must be reviewed by the District Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC).
  2. The LPDC may approve the professional development activity or ask that it be revised based upon the following:
    1. the inclusion of the activity in the educator's Professional Development Plan;
    2. the review and approval of that plan by the LPDC;
    3. the application of the activity to district, building, classroom, student and/or the educator's professional goals;
    4. the assignment of Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to the activity based upon the guidelines below.
  3. The Ohio Department of Education will no longer approve or issue Continuing Education units after June 30, 1998. The approval and official award of CEU's will be solely the responsibility of the District LPDC as per the requirements of Senate Bill 230. For official Pilot Project Districts, the local approval and award of CEU's can begin during 1997-1998, and be used for the renewal of certificates that expire in 1998 and thereafter. It is the sole responsibility of the educator to maintain a record of district approved CEUs throughout his/her career.
  4. The Guidelines used for the establishment of CEU'S:
    1. One hour of professional development activity equates to .1 CEUs (one-tenth unit).Ten hours of professional development activities equates to 1.0 CEU (one full unit).When university hours and CEU's are combined for the renewal of the educator's certificate or license, 3.0 CEU's equates to 1.0 Semester Hour.
    2. The definition of "approved activity" is dependent upon the communication between the educator his/her development plan, and the District LPDC.
  5. Professional Development Activities
    1. This list is not all-inclusive, and educators are encouraged by the District LPDC to create and adapt activities to their individual needs and, as applicable, the needs of students, classroom, building, district, and employment responsibilities within the District.
    2. When external "providers" are sought by the educator, he/she should verify that the District LPDC recognizes them as a quality Professional Development Provider.
