5230 Elementary and Middle School Student Evaluation

XCS uses pre-assessment, formative, cumulative and school-wide evaluations in planning educational experiences of an individual student.

5231 Pre-assessment Evaluations

5231.1
All Kindergartners are placed in the program only after achieving a recommended level on a readiness test given by XCS the month before school starts. The results of a preschool readiness test may also be used.

5231.2
All new students whose standardized test scores from the previous year are below grade level or those for whom standardized test scores are not available will take a placement test to verify that the student meets admission requirements.

5231.3
Results from ability tests administered in the Spring to selected grades will be used to identify students who need special programs.

5232 Formative Assessment

5232.1
Every nine weeks, academic achievement reports for all subjects are issued. Interim reports will be sent in the middle of this period to those students experiencing extreme difficulty in a subject area.

5232.2
Report marks are indicated by a letter that shows the extent to which the pupil has completed grade level objectives in the course of study.

5232.3
Report marks show the extent the pupil has applied himself according to the individual student's ability and progress without comparison to the other class members.

5232.4
Report marks are arrived at through the use of homework and workbook pages, projects or reports, quizzes, curriculum chapter and unit tests, teacher-made tests, and teacher observation of student performance on grade level objectives in the course of study.

5232.5
On the Individual CBE Progress Chart, the teacher marks "X" for mastery for each objective level (fact/skill, concept, or problem solving) when the student has met the corresponding objectives.

5232.6
If the student is not displaying satisfactory progress, the teacher may recommend tutoring or further testing.

5232.7
If the student is displaying above average performance in reading or math, placement testing may be repeated to determine if a higher level of instruction is needed.

5233 Cumulative Assessment

5233.1
At the end of the year, students in grades 6 - 8 are assigned a final grade for each subject by averaging the grades for the 4 grading periods of the year.

5233.2
At the beginning of the school year, the teacher receives the previous year's Progress Charts. In the Remedial Needs section of the Individual CBE Progress Chart, the teacher writes the CBE objectives from the previous year that the student had not mastered. The teacher records the student's mastery for these objectives in the same way as for the other objectives.

5233.2
Yearly standardized achievement tests and writing assessments for each grade level are administered in the spring.

5233.3
The office maintains an academic cumulative file for each student that includes yearly SAT scores, writing assessments, CBE results, results from ability tests, copies of yearly academic achievement report, and results from any other standardized testing.

5233 School-wide Assessments

5233.2
CBE programs and curricular subjects are assessed every 5 years, including an evaluation of the results from the intervening annual standardized testing.
