Xenos Christian Schools Entry Year Program
Implementation plan
Xenos Christian Schools has an implementation plan for entry year teachers which include a 60 hour orientation session the summer before teaching begins and mentoring in the form of grade level lead teacher mentors and same building teacher mentors.
Entry year orientation session
The entry year orientation session at XCS runs for two weeks during the summer. All entry year teachers are required to participate in this training program. The components of the orientation session consist of:
- School philosophy
- Job Description
- Teacher Expectations
- Classroom Management
- District Structure
- Policies and Procedures
- Course of Study
- Competency Based Education Objectives
- Curriculum Training
Identification of mentors
Mentors are identified by staff development coordinators and building principals. Four half days are scheduled for grade level meetings where grade level mentoring takes place. In addition to these scheduled meetings, entry year teachers meet with an assigned mentor on a regular basis to help them with planning, curriculum and classroom management. The staff development coordinator observes entry year teachers weekly and provides feedback on these observations.
Mentor assignment
Entry year teachers have a mentor assigned to them, these mentors are identified by staff development coordinators and building principals. In addition to lead teacher and peer mentoring, the staff development coordinator provides mentoring input on an on going basis through the year.
Mentor training
Annual training meetings will be conducted as needed where expectations will be communicated to the mentors. The mentors will be re-familiarized with the job description, annual evaluation forms and First year IPDP form for new teachers.
Mentor activities
Prior to the following events, the mentor will instruct the entry year teacher in each of these areas.
- Open house
- Interim reports
- Report cards
- Parent/teacher conferences
- See First Year Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP)
Mentor coordination
The staff development coordinator for XCS schools provides support to entry year teachers, mentors and the mentoring team along with the building principals.
Entry year final report
When entry year teachers who are pursuing certification come through our program, we will submit an entry year final report to the Department of Education, which describes the results of their Entry Year Program and includes a budget narrative and expenditures.
