Oracle study

Immediate context

  • What oracle precedes and follows the passage?
  • What narrative, if any, introduces the oracle?

 

Structure
  • To whom is the oracle directed and why?
  • What is the main point of the oracle?
  • How is the main point supported? (reasons, images, etc.)
Content
  • Language:
  • Determine the meaning of the language used (symbol, image… )
  • What temporal framework(s) does the oracle indicate?
  • In what way does the oracle relate to God’s plan
  • Judgments based on violation of Law or disregard for God’s covenant people
  • Blessings based on Law
  • Promise based on continuation of salvation history, previous blessings, etc.
  • What new dimensions of God’s plan are revealed?
  • How is this oracle used in other biblical texts? How does this clarify meaning of terms, temporal reference, etc.?

 

  • In what way does this oracle offer concrete hope or warning—what should we do with this prophecy?
