Skeleton (Narrative Structure)

A. Context:

1. What is the theological center of the book?

2. What events directly precede and follow the narrative?

B. Main Point: What is the main point of the narrative? Why?

 

C. Narrative development: Summarize the scenes in terms of:

1. Actions and how they relate to the main point

 

 

 

2. Characters and how they relate to the main point

 

 

 

 

Muscle (Clarifying Content)

A. History, culture, and language

1. Summarize historical setting as it relates to the narrative

2. Define institutions, persons, events, as they relate to the narrative

3. Define key and unfamiliar terms

B. Theology

1. How does the main point advance the argument of the book?

2. How is the text used to "fill" previous revelation or used in subsequent revelation?

 

Skin (Application)

A. What actions, attitudes, or convictions are being called for in the original audience?

B. How do the actions, attitudes, or convictions directed to the original audience relate to us?

1. Understanding and convictions about God’s plan revealed in the narrative

2. Understanding and convictions about God’s nature revealed in the narrative

3. What actions do the narrative call us to?
